Wining and Dining > Restaurants, Cafes and Bars
In August 2006, Joseph Valore, Elvis Abrahanowicz and Ben Milgate teamed up to introduce to Sydney their love of Argentinean food and wine with their first restaurant Bodega in Surry Hills. The brash mural proclaiming “barriga llena corazón contento” (full belly happy heart) became a Sydney Icon along with their unapologetic loud music and shared dining. The rest, as they say is history…with the team opening the grand Porteno and Gardel’s Bar on Cleveland Street in September 2010 this time introducing to Australia the Asado and Parilla, which were expertly tended to by Porteño’s very own Goucho, Adan Abrahanowicz (Elvis’ dad).
2016 was a busy year with the opening of Bodega 1904 in the historic Tramsheds in Forest Lodge, the relocation of Porteno Restaurant to Holt Street Surry Hills and transforming Cleveland Street into an Event Space. Teaming up with chef Joel Humphreys, Bodega 1904 continues the group’s love of shared dining with fresh local, seasonal produce. Sitting proudly in the centre of Bodega 1904 is the groups first retail Wine Store. Curated by Joseph Valore, the store offers boutique local and imported wines. Moving Porteno Restaurant to Holt Street allowed Ben and Elvis to design a more composed and refined menu while still offering the traditional Asado and Parrilla style of cooking.
After 13 years, Bodega moved in with our sister venue WyNo located behind Porteno Restaurant (entrance on Gladstone Street). Just like the original, the menu is fun and always interesting. An inventive offering of modern tapas inspired by Latin cuisines, it is prepared right before your eyes in the open kitchen.
